A SIN OR A TABOO?

OK, EVERY ONE COMMENT ON THIS ONE CAUSE I WAS REALLY WONDERING WHAT PEOPLE THINK.

HERE IS THE SCENARIO:

I HAVE THIS BIBLE THAT IS LITERALLY FALLING APART THAT A GOOD FRIEND OF THE FAMILY GAVE US. I DON'T WANT TO KEEP IT BUT I DO WANT TO BASICALLY DESTROY IS FOR COLLAGES. IS IT A SIN TO THROW A BIBLE IN THE TRASH, OR JUST TABOO? AND HOW ABOUT DEMOLISHING IT FOR THE SAKE OF ART?

  1. Okay, so I would think that if you were doing it out of anger at God, hatred of Christianity, or anything of that nature that it would be in seriously bad taste to believers... and of course if you were creating something sacriligious with it - of course, that's my though and knowing what it means to you I highly doubt that you would have that sort of intent... and you know, at the very least it would be better to recycle it than to throw it away, even if that recycling is at the recycling center - you know, God did create the earth... ha... sorry, I'm hopped up on frozen lemonade at Panera where they have free wi-fi. Hugs, good luck with the art project - Meg

  4. Jeffrey said "I thinks both would be a taboo because it is something that the average person, especially crhistian persons would feel uncomfortable, or even guilty doing. That is probably why our friend gave it to us."

  5. I think that bibles no matter what the condition of them tend to keep on being passed on to other people because of the same reason jeffrey said.

  6. I am going to be making a new post soon because this one doesn't seem to be getting any more responds, despite my nagging to all my family members. Thanks for those of you who did respond.

  7. I would think that it is not so much the physical Bible that is important, it is only paper and ink, it is the content that matters.

I found a post about this on the internet and it said:

"We understand that, while the message is holy, the pages, ink, and binding are only our way of recording that message. To dispose of the pages, ink, and binding when they are worn out does not show a lack of respect for the message itself."

In my personal opinion, I would be umcomfortable with someone using Bible pages in a disrespecting way towards God. However, I did find this link interesting. It shows artwork using Bible pages. http://psalmsfortoday.com/page_4.html

But more important than my opinion is God's. That is what you should consider. And if in considering what is right you feel uncomfortable using it for art, than you shouldn't.

    Love,

    Amy

Thanks Amy, And thank you for the research, I coun't find anything on the subject. That's the journalist showing in you! After reading all the comments and thinking about it more, I am very excited about this project and cannot wait to start. I'm not sure how it is going to turn out but it will reflect my love for God and his word, and possibly bring me closer to him. I think it is going to be a huge series, so those of you who want to make dibs on a peice let me know. And of course i will post pics as they become finished.

  10. hi jen sorry its taken me awhile to comment...I have really been thinking about it off and on now. I think if it isn't used in a way that is blasphemous, then it is ok!

As far as throwing it away entirely, that makes me nervous...better to put it in a corner of the attic (like everything else, lol!). I think I've just read so many books over the years about how hard it has been for different groups to even be able to have god's word, that I just couldn't throw away a bible! Give it to goodwill, or something!!

Can't wait to see the art! love you, Mom

  11. Thats true mom, Throwing it away does seem a little brash, there are a lot of people all over the world that are not lucky enough to even own a bible.
